In early October its off to Cadwell for the final rounds of the Championship. I go in to the round 61 points clear of my main rival Ivan Linton. With 100 points up for grabs it a nerve racking end to the season. Two 2nd places on Saturday would give me the title.
Driving to Cadwell in the pooring rain in October with the race bike in the back of the van and soaking wet clothes from loading up is no-ones idea of a good time, arriving at Cadwell we don the waterproofs and try to put up the orning in the pooring rain. Fortunalty when we wake on Saturday morning for qualifying the skies are clear and the wind has gone - by the time we ge to our qualifying session the track is dry and it all systems go - I really want a front row start so I dont have to get involved in any scraps to get the results I need.
Qualifying was a busy one, Ivan and myself went out together but never really managed to get clear track - the session was red flagged early on when 3rd place man Chaz fell off, and we set off again. Although I never really got any clear track I knew that Ivan hadn't either because I was with him!. I qualified on Pole with Ivan only a few tenths behind. The main person to ruin the chance of the podim finish I needed was down in 23 position after his fall.
I knew a good start was essential in the race, and I got it. I led the pack round onto the back straight - when it all went a bit wrong. I missed a gear going up the hill and Ivan had no where to go but straight into the back of me, it was a fast and hard impact that pushed my exhaust out at an angle and my seat hump in the air so I couldn't sit down properly, I was pushed right out of my seat and felt his bike hit my leg - I was waiting for us both to go down but somehow we stayed up right and still led the way into park corner. I could feel the bike wasn't right and kept checking to see if I was to be black flagged, it was clear to me after the first few tentative corners that the bike was ok, although I couldn't get my foot onto the right peg properly because the exhaust was at such an angle. No black flag came out so I kept my head down and kept going. Ivan came past after a few laps and I was happy to follow him, the pace was hot with us both well under lap record speed, we were in the 1.41's where previousy a 43 was a good time. Ivan ran wide onto the grass and I got through again into the lead, he didnt lose too much time and closed me in again, I wasn't going to get involved in a scrap at this late stage in the race - after being so lucky earlier on and he came past and I cruised to the line in 2nd place. Part 1 of the plan complete.
Race 2 was much more to plan with no impacts or moments, Ivan setting a speedy pace again, this time he started to pull away and with my pit board telling me I had no-one close behind a cruised in with 2nd place again and the Championship. Even this race saw us both hovering around the new lap record.
I want to thank: EVERYONE who has been involved in this season.and made it SO great. All the riders have been awesome - especially Ivan, I think we have really pushed the limits this year and had some close racing. Thanks to ALL my sponsors - especially Kevin from Antec - without you guys it really is imposible.
Bring on 2007 - watch this space!
