The Final Round of the championship takes us to Donnington Park with the top 6 places as yet undecided. I enter the meeting knowing that I cant go lower than 2nd place - I enjoy a 2 points lead but anything can happen.
The weather is real nasty in the morning, its been raining all night and the new surface on the track is still wet and slippy but its not raining and the track is drying very slowly. For qualifying it has to be wets, I go out a while behind Gav as he is the only person that really matters on the day and draw him in over a few laps and know I have more in reserve, I am pretty sure I have gone quicker so I slow down and save tyres for the race. I qualified 2nd behind Jack Wright and Gav is 4th behind Sam Read.
The 1st race was a real gamble on tyres, talking to other competitors who raced before us I went for the full wets, arriving in the collection area most are on drys - including Gav, will the gamble work? well.... er no actually! for the 1st few laps it was fine and I felt I had it under control with Gav and I swapping positions between us for 3rd and 4th, unfortunalty I cooked the rear tyre and had no grip what so ever and had to back off to finish the race -with many slides and close moments I decided better to finish the race and concentrate on the next one.
So, all season comes to an 6 lap dash, fantastic but I know I have to beat Gav to win the title. On the first corner I am pushed wide and run onto the grass, by the time I rejoin Gav and a few others have gone - I rode really hard with no reserve to catch the pack setting the fastest lap of the race. The last three or four laps have to be the most fun I have ever had on a bike, with four riders swapping position on almost ever corner and pushing to the max. One second I was on Gav's rear wheel and the next he is 2 bikes in front!!! no one could guess the out come and I thought it would be down to the last lap - but on lap 5 going into coppice Gav hits a false nutral and goes up the inside of 2 other bikes taking them all down, I just escape the crash to ride home slowly to get the title - I finished the race in 2nd and was happy to let the winner go!. All riders in the crash were OK.
So after a brilliant season racing a big THANX to all the CB500 riders who made the season so much fun - role on next year!
